Most people buy Arm & Hammer for one reason: baking soda. Church & Dwight has been selling it out of Princeton, New Jersey since 1846, and every litter bag in the range puts baking soda odor control on the front of the pack. On our bench that promise mostly holds. What separates the three bags is everything else.
Clump & Seal came out on top at 8.7 out of 10 and holds the cleanest dust reading in the range at 0.45mg per pour. HardBall clumps hardest, 9 out of 10, with 87 percent of its clumps surviving our drop test. Super Scoop is the cheap one: $13.99 a bag, $0.35 a day and $0.35 a pound, the lowest running cost we measured for this brand.
The catch runs through all three bags. Not one of them scored above 6 out of 10 on dust or above 6 out of 10 on tracking. If someone in your home has a sensitive chest, read the dust column before you read the price.

- 3.HardBall is the scooping pick. Its clumps scored 9 out of 10 and 87 percent of them survived the drop test, the hardest result in the range.
- 4.Super Scoop is the wallet pick. At $13.99 a bag it costs $0.35 a day to run, but it also carries the range’s worst dust reading at 0.52mg per pour, and 64 percent of its clumps survived the drop test out of a 50-clump sample.

Clump & Seal, on our numbers. It scored 8.7 out of 10 overall, the highest of the three bags we tested, and it leads the range on both odor (9.1) and dust (6.0, or 0.45mg per pour). It costs $16.99 a bag and $0.43 a day to run.
Does the baking soda really control odor?
It held for a week in our run. Ammonia over the Clump & Seal box read 1 ppm on day one and climbed to 8 ppm by day seven, and our testers rated the smell 9 out of 10 on day one and 7 out of 10 on day seven. The fragrance is strong enough that some people notice it more than the litter box.
Is Arm & Hammer a good choice for a dusty-sensitive home?
Not our first call. The three bags scored 6.0, 6.0 and 5.7 on dust, and the pour readings ran 0.45mg, 0.48mg and 0.52mg. If dust is the deciding factor, the low-dust roundup lists litters that read a tenth of that.
