People shop Naturally Fresh expecting the usual natural-litter compromise: kinder to the planet, softer clumps, more scooping. That is the thing to get wrong here. Naturally Fresh is made from walnut shells, and in our drop test 89 of every 100 clumps came through whole. That is the hardest clumping of any plant-based litter we have a number for, ahead of tofu at 78 and corn at 76.
We tested one bag, Naturally Fresh Walnut, across four cats in two homes. It scored 8.8 out of 10 overall on the same five tests every litter here faces.

Does walnut litter really clump as hard as clay?
Not as hard as the best clay, but close. Naturally Fresh held 89 percent of its clumps in our drop test. The hardest clay we tested held 98 percent. Against everyday budget clay at 58 to 66 percent, walnut wins outright.
Is Naturally Fresh safe if someone in the house has a nut allergy?
We did not test that and we will not guess at it. A walnut-shell litter is a nut product in the room, so ask your doctor before you bring a bag home. If the answer is no, Sustainably Yours is corn based and Feline Pine is wood.
How long does a bag last?
About 6 weeks for one cat and about 4 weeks in a multi-cat home, which puts the running cost at $0.54 a day. That is mid-pack: cheaper than tofu at $0.97, dearer than budget clay at $0.30.
