Almost everyone who searches for Catalyst is expecting wood pellets. Catalyst is not pellets. It pours as soft granules that feel closer to sand under a paw, and that texture is the entire reason the brand exists. It is aimed at the cat who steps into a pellet box once, feels the hard edges, and walks back out.
We bought one Catalyst bag, Catalyst Soft Wood, and put it through the same five tests every litter on this site gets: dust weighed at the pour, clumps dropped from three feet, odor tracked over a full box life, granules counted around the box, and cost worked out per day. It scored 8.7 out of 10 overall across six cats in three homes.
Dust came in at 0.15mg per pour, low for a wood litter. The part that costs you is the price. At $27.99 for 18 lbs, it works out to $0.72 a day, the third-highest daily cost of the 17 litters we have priced. With Catalyst you are buying texture, not raw performance.
5 Things to Know Before You Buy Catalyst
- 1.Texture is the reason to buy it. Catalyst pours as soft granules, not pellets, so a cat that refuses Feline Pine or Ökocat pellets will usually stand on this one.
- 2.Dust measured 0.15mg per pour, an 8.3 out of 10. That is the same reading we got from World’s Best, and a quarter of the 0.58mg we weighed from the cheapest clay on our bench.
- 3.Clumping is the weak spot. 73 of every 100 clumps survived our three-foot drop test, a 7.7 out of 10. Scoop it gently or you will break clumps apart in the box.
- 4.It is flushable, biodegradable and light to carry. Very few bags manage all three at once.
- 5.It is not built for a busy multi-cat box. One cat gets about 5 weeks from a bag. A multi-cat home gets about 3.5 weeks, and at $0.72 a day that adds up fast.

Is Catalyst worth $27.99 a bag?
It depends on your cat, not on the litter. At $0.72 a day it is the third most expensive litter we have priced. If your cat refuses pellets, that money buys you a box she will actually use. If she is happy on anything, Naturally Fresh runs $0.54 a day and clumps harder.
Is Catalyst the same as pine pellet litter?
No. Feline Pine and similar brands are hard pellets that break down into sawdust and need a sifting box. Catalyst is a soft granule that clumps and scoops like a normal litter, so your existing box works.
Does Catalyst clump well enough to scoop?
Yes, but not firmly. 73 percent of clumps survived our drop test against 98 percent from the hardest clay we tested. Give clumps a few hours to set and lift them with a slotted scoop rather than a wire one.
