Best Low-Tracking Cat Litter
Four bags chosen for what stays in the box, with counted granule spread, clump strength and cost per day on every card.
This roundup is maintained by the ReviewCatLitter editorial team and ties every winner back to hands-on review data, methodology notes, and current comparison coverage.
How to use this roundup
Four bags judged on what stays behind. Tuft + Paw is soy / tofu at $29.00, PrettyLitter is silica crystal at $24.00, World's Best Cat Litter is corn litter at $29.99 and Boxiecat Premium is premium clumping clay at $27.99.
How they track: Tuft + Paw very low, PrettyLitter minimal, World's Best Cat Litter minimal, Boxiecat Premium low. For Boxiecat Premium we counted granules inside a 12-inch ring drawn round the box and got 10 granules.
What keeps litter inside the box
Grain weight beats everything else
Fine, light granules wedge between the toe pads and ride out. Denser grain drops off at the lip of the box, which is most of the difference between these bags.
What it costs you elsewhere
The two picks that track least are also the two that cost most per day, and one of them does not clump. We put that on the card rather than the small print.

World's Best Cat Litter
Low tracking without losing the clump

We counted 10 granules in the 12-inch ring around the box, the lowest count we have taken from a clay litter.

Corn grain that is heavy enough to drop off a paw at the lip of the box, and it still clumps hard enough to lift in one go.

Crystals are too big to ride out on a paw. Nothing tracks, because nothing sticks. You give up clumping to get that.

The best tracking score of any litter we have tested. Soy grain is soft, dense and does not stick between the pads.

How we pick a low-tracking litter
Tracking is a grain problem. Fine, light granules stick between the toe pads and get carried out. Heavier grain and bigger pellets fall off at the lip of the box. That is most of the answer, and it is why two clays from the same shelf can behave completely differently.
We counted granules in a 12-inch ring around the box for the two clay litters on the bench. Boxiecat Premium left 10 granules. Dr. Elsey's Ultra, which is the better litter on almost every other measure, left 18 granules. Same room, same box, same fill depth.
What you give up to stop tracking
The two bags here that track least are also the two that cost most per day, and one of them does not clump at all. That is the shape of this category. If tracking is annoying rather than a problem you have to solve, a good clay plus a mat is the cheaper answer.
Where the litter goes matters as much as the grain
A high-sided box with a step-out lip catches more than any litter change. So does putting the box on a hard floor instead of carpet, because granules can be swept up before they are ground in. Read our guide to stopping litter tracking for the setup side of it.
Who this page is for
People with dark floors, bare feet, or a box in a hallway. If your actual complaint is dust in the air rather than grit underfoot, the dust-free roundup is the better page.
Frequently Asked Questions
What actually makes one litter track more than another?
Grain size and grain weight. Fine, light granules wedge between the toe pads and ride out. Heavier grain and larger pellets drop back at the lip of the box. Everything else, mats included, only catches what the litter already let out.
Do you measure tracking or judge it by eye?
For two bags on the bench we counted granules inside a 12-inch ring drawn around the box. Boxiecat Premium came in at 10 granules and Dr. Elsey's Ultra at 18 granules. The rest carry a tracking score from the same test setup rather than a counted number, and we say so on the card.
Will a litter mat fix a litter that tracks?
It helps and it does not solve it. A mat catches granules that already left the box, so a heavy-tracking clay still ends up down the hallway once the mat fills. Switching grain does more than any mat we have used.
Do pellets track less than clumping litter?
Almost always, because a pellet is too big to lodge in a paw. The trade is scooping: pellets break down instead of clumping, so you sift and change the whole box more often.
