What the number is
A repeatable comparison between bags, taken the same way every time, on litter we bought ourselves. Use it to rank one bag against another.
What it is not
Not an exposure limit, not a health rating, and not advice about your lungs. Two people in the same room with the same litter can have completely different days.
Four habits that cut dust on any litter
Changing the bag helps. Changing how you handle it helps on the bag you already own.
Fill the box somewhere else
Refill outdoors, in a garage, or in a bathroom with the fan running. Then carry the filled box back. The airborne cloud stays where you made it.
Let the box settle before you scoop
Digging through a bed that was poured a minute ago lifts the fines straight back up. Give it a few minutes.
Wear a mask on refill day
A cheap dust mask for the two minutes a refill takes is a small ask, and it is the only part of the job where the air is loaded.
Talk to a doctor, not a review site
If your breathing changed when a cat or a litter box arrived, that is a medical question and it deserves a medical answer. Bring the litter name with you. Swapping to a low-dust bag is a sensible thing to try, and it is not a substitute for finding out what is actually going on.

- Ökocat Paper Pellet weighed in lowest of everything we have tested at 0.00mg per pour. The dustiest we recorded was Frisco by Chewy at 0.58mg.
- Is a dust-free label reliable?
- "Dust free" and "99% dust free" are marketing phrases with no shared test behind them, so they cannot be compared across brands. The table above is one test applied the same way to every bag, which is what makes the ranking mean something.
- Does a covered box help with dust?
- It keeps some of the cloud in during digging, and then releases it at your face when you lift the lid. Handling habits change more than a lid does.
