PrettyLitter is worth considering for the right home

PrettyLitter is the iPhone of cat litter: slick marketing, clever tech, and expensive. The health monitoring color change is real and easy to read, though we ran no pH check of our own to confirm the shade. For older cats or health-concerned owners, it is legitimate early detection. The stir-the-urine method puts some people off, and solid waste odor control needs help.

Silica gel crystals carry pH indicators that change color with the pH of your cat's urine, and a red shade can mean blood. It is a screening tool, not a diagnosis: we ran no independent pH check, so treat a color change as a reason to call your vet. It does not clump. You scoop the solid waste daily, then stir the crystals so the absorbed urine can dry out, and swap the whole box for a fresh one after 3-4 weeks.

The Science: How Health Monitoring Actually Works

The silica gel crystals carry pH indicators that react to how acidic or alkaline your cat's urine is. That is ordinary chemistry doing an unusual job: the litter changes color so you notice a change before your cat shows one.

The color change showed up fast in our run. We ran no independent pH check, so treat it as a prompt to call the vet. The Stir-The-Urine Reality

Here is the part the marketing videos skip. You don't scoop urine clumps. You scoop the solids, then stir the wet crystals around so they can dry out.

By week 3 the crystals are yellow and saturated. In a multi-cat house they saturate faster than they dry, which leads to pooling at the bottom.
