Why the dirty box travels with you

The order of operations

Two weeks before

Check the litter you use is sold near the new address, or order a bag to arrive there.
Run the current bag down. Do not move 30 lbs of clay you can buy at the other end.
Do not change brands. Whatever you were thinking of trying, try it next month.

Moving day

The box is the last thing packed and the first thing unpacked. Put it in the car, not the van.
Keep the used litter. Do not wash the box. That smell is the only familiar thing arriving with the cat.
Shut the cat in one room at each end, with the box, before the doors start opening.

First 48 hours

Set the box up in the safe room before you let the cat out of the carrier.
Leave the cat in that one room until it has used the box at least twice.
Then open the house one room at a time, and add the second box before you open the last door.

Can you buy the same bag at the other end?

The half-used bag and the stockpile

One open bag: take it

Roll the top down, tape it, and stand it upright in a crate in the car. An open bag lying flat in a van tips at the first roundabout and you spend moving day hoovering clay out of a carpet you no longer own.

Four spare bags: give them away

Litter is heavy, cheap and sold everywhere. Moving 150 lbs of it costs more in van space than buying it again. A local shelter or a neighbour with a cat will take unopened bags the same day.

Used litter you scoop on the way out goes in a sealed bag in the general waste, not down the toilet of a house you are handing over. Why flushing is the wrong call is a separate story, and it matters more than people think.

Once the cat has the run of the place

Then, and only then, put the boxes where you actually want them. Add the spare box at the same time. A new house is bigger or laid out differently, and the count that worked in the old place may not cover a second floor here.
