Four places it actually fits

Every one of these is a trade. Pick the trade you can live with, not the one that looks tidiest in a photo.

Under the bathroom sink, door propped

Works because: Hard floor, a drain nearby, and nobody walks through it at 3am.

Catch: A closed bathroom door locks the cat out. You need a wedge or a cat flap.

Beside the toilet

Works because: The narrowest usable gap in most flats, and the mop is already there.

Catch: Only fits a small box, and a small box is the commonest reason a cat aims over the side.

A bottom cupboard with the door removed

Works because: Hides the box, keeps grit inside the frame, and costs nothing but a screwdriver.

Catch: Rented kitchens: keep the door and the screws. Also, no cupboard next to the food.

Balcony or hallway

Works because: Frees the whole floor plan.

Catch: Cold, wet and out of sight. A box the cat cannot reach at night is not a box.

Pouring dust into a room you sleep in

In a house you fill the box in a utility room and shut the door. In a studio the cloud settles on the duvet. Pour slowly, hold the bag low against the side of the box, and open a window while you do it. If anyone in the flat has asthma, the litter choice stops being a preference.
