Under the bathroom sink, door propped
Works because: Hard floor, a drain nearby, and nobody walks through it at 3am.
Catch: A closed bathroom door locks the cat out. You need a wedge or a cat flap.
Put the box on a hard floor in the quietest corner that still has two ways out, buy a litter that stays in the box, and stop storing bags you will not open this month. In a studio the box is never more than a few steps from where you sleep, so grit and bag storage matter more than they would in a house.
Every one of these is a trade. Pick the trade you can live with, not the one that looks tidiest in a photo.
Works because: Hard floor, a drain nearby, and nobody walks through it at 3am.
Catch: A closed bathroom door locks the cat out. You need a wedge or a cat flap.
Works because: The narrowest usable gap in most flats, and the mop is already there.
Catch: Only fits a small box, and a small box is the commonest reason a cat aims over the side.
Works because: Hides the box, keeps grit inside the frame, and costs nothing but a screwdriver.
Catch: Rented kitchens: keep the door and the screws. Also, no cupboard next to the food.
Works because: Frees the whole floor plan.
Catch: Cold, wet and out of sight. A box the cat cannot reach at night is not a box.
ASPCA puts the rule plainly: quiet but not cornered, away from busy or intimidating places like the washer and dryer or the dog's bowls, and big enough to walk into. A small flat does not change the rule. It just leaves you fewer corners.
That is the difference between a studio and a house. Here are the six litters that stayed in the box best in our own testing.
| Litter | Type | How it tracked | Tracking score |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tuft + Paw | Soy / Tofu | Very low | 9.2 |
| PrettyLitter | Silica Crystal | Minimal | 9.1 |
| World's Best Cat Litter | Corn Litter | Minimal | 9 |
| Ökocat Paper Pellet | Paper Pellet | Low | 8.9 |
| Feline Pine | Pine Pellet | Pellets stay put | 8.8 |
| Sustainably Yours | Natural Corn + Cassava | Low | 8.4 |
A mat helps, but it only works if the cat has to walk on it. Put it directly against the box so there is no bare floor to hop onto. The full tracking guide covers mats, box shapes and paw type.
Nobody mentions this until the third floor. These are the lighter bags we have bought, smallest first, with the dust reading in case the flat has no ventilation.
| Litter | Bag | Dust per pour | Lasts, one cat |
|---|---|---|---|
| PrettyLitter | 8 lbs | not measured | 4 weeks |
| Tuft + Paw | 9 lbs | 0.05mg | 4 weeks |
| Catalyst Soft Wood | 18 lbs | 0.15mg | 5 weeks |
| Ökocat Paper Pellet | 20 lbs | 0.00mg | 3.5 weeks |
| Sustainably Yours | 26 lbs | 0.11mg | 6 weeks |
| Naturally Fresh Walnut | 26 lbs | 0.13mg | 6 weeks |
| World's Best Cat Litter | 28 lbs | 0.15mg | 6 weeks |
In a house you fill the box in a utility room and shut the door. In a studio the cloud settles on the duvet. Pour slowly, hold the bag low against the side of the box, and open a window while you do it. If anyone in the flat has asthma, the litter choice stops being a preference.
What we measured on dustTracking scores and dust readings on this page come from our own bought-and-weighed testing. Placement advice is sourced to the ASPCA page linked above.
